Our Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s students headed back to North Wales to tackle their 4 day qualifying expedition. Once again Mr Taylor, our DofE manager, accompanied our intrepid young people on their adventure..
North Wales DofE Gold Qualifying Expedition 18/21 June 2018
The Gold expedition involved hiking from Pont Newydd in the Carneddau to Conway Bridge in North Wales. The route followed the water course from Llyn Colwydd, Llyn Ogwen along the Afon Ogwen to the sea, then along the coastal path. The group were supported with certain tasks as they worked as part of a team setting up and dismantling tents, cooking, cleaning, packing and supporting others. The weather was generally warm..
..apart from in the mountains where the grouped coped well with windy, damp and misty conditions with visibility down to around 50m on some difficult paths..
A few downpours added a bit of unpredictability to the journey.
A long second day brought blisters to many in the group..
However a hearty meal, a good sleep, decent showers, some first aid and TLC raised the spirits.
Day 3 was also a long one; this was made more accessible by slightly easier walking, the use of trainers, determination and the positive group spirit..
Day 4 ended in sunshine as the tired group arrived at the finish..
Here’s what they had to say about their expedition..
This expedition was a great and resounding success. It was a serious undertaking and was only made possible by the determination and positivity of everyone in the group.
Well done, everyone, what a fantastic achievement!!! We’re extremely grateful to Mr Taylor, Mr Lawrence, Miss Rhodes and Mr Urey for supporting our young people and making the expedition possible.
