It’s been an exciting week at the Learning Centre as Wednesday saw the launch of the iPad One-to One project. The students were really excited to receive their new iPads……as demonstrated by Natasha!

The next few weeks will be a period of ongoing development as we work to ensure every student can effectively access and engage with their iPad. It will also provide the opportunity for staff to explore which additional aids and adaptations are required, especially for our students within the Interactive Base.
This is a very exciting time and I look forward to sharing our iPad ‘Wow’ moments in the weeks to come.

This year, the Learning Centre option offer is designed to ensure it meets the needs of all our learners. In line with our mission ‘Learning Together, Learning For All, Learning for Life’, we now have two food based options, ‘Food Industry’ and ‘Leisure Cooking’. This year we have welcomed Mrs Walters to the New Bridge family and I’m already getting to taste some very tasty treats. Thanks Lewis for this week’s Club Sandwich..

Here is a short report on Mrs Walters’ first few weeks with us..

My first two weeks in the food technology room have been amazing, with all the pupils and staff making me feel really welcome. All the students have worked hard practising their knife skills, cutting and chopping. This week the students have been making club sandwiches, preparing finely chopped salad ingredients. They have enjoyed eating these at the end of the lessons. In the food industry lesson we have prepared and stewed apples that have been grown by the Hortus students to make apple crumbles. In the leisure cooking lessons the students have made chocolate cornflake cakes and will be making more for the Macmillan coffee afternoon on Friday.

We are looking forward to welcoming parents and carers to our Macmillan coffee afternoon to enjoy some yummy cakes whilst also raising money for a great cause – we hope to see you at 2pm on Friday!

Work Experience placements have already begun for some of our Learning Centre students and Job Coach Bethany Fletcher has said they’re off to a great start with all 3 doing amazing work and clearly really excited to go back..

During Friday’s assembly I had the pleasure of presenting certificates to a number of students for the qualifications they gained last year, from Functional Skills qualifications in Maths and English to Entry Level Science. Thomas also received his badge and certificate for achieving his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Well done to all!

As you know, a letter has been sent home (click here to view it) with details of Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission’s upcoming return visit following the Oldham Local Area SEND inspection. As part of the re-visit, they would very much like to have your views which you can give at an open meeting on Monday 23rd September. You can find more details on the POINT (Oldham’s Parent Carer Forum) website here.

Have a great weekend,

Dawn
